250-Hour HeartMind Shiatsu Certification

Matthew Sweigart, CI is proud to present the 250 hour HeartMind Shiatsu
Training Program. The program provides 180 hours of modality training made up of four 45 hour levels, each divided into manageable 15 hour segments. An additional 70 hours of clinical supervision rounds out the program. Each course builds upon the last, and students proceed through the program at their own pace, integrating the teachings and practice with practical life experience. The course is appropriate for beginners in the bodywork field and also as continuing education as an additional modality in any body/mind or massage therapy practice.

Matthew Sweigart, CI director of the program studied and taught with the Ohashi Institute from 1985 to 2003, The HeartMind Shiatsu Training Program offers an integration of traditional Asian Medicine, Personal Cultivation methods, Nature teachings of North America and modern somatic awareness practices, interwoven in a seamless and delightful way to help healing artists create a well-rounded sustainable healing arts practice.

Join the HeartMind Shiatsu Training Program and discover for yourself a
whole new world of healing energy, and find the support you need to make positive changes for yourself and for all those whom you touch. You may begin your study with either Meridians Alive or Elemental Explorations, but you must complete both prior to graduation from the program.

Meridian Insights — 45 hours
HeartMind Shiatsu I-A: Meridians Alive 1, 2, 3! opens the 250 hour program with experiential study of the primary meridian pathways of life energy flow. The Primary Meridians of Asian medical theory form a powerful knowledge system which helps you improve your understanding of the health and well-being of body mind and spirit. Students discover a deep and effective way to perceive meridians and bring that knowledge to help others as well. Beginner level HeartMInd Shiatsu techniques which can be used with friends and family are taught.

Elemental Explorations — 45 hours
HeartMind Shiatsu I-B: Elemental Explorations takes students on a journey into the Traditional Five Element theory of Chinese Medicine. This powerful theory is at the foundation of Eastern medicine. Through a deep study of the natural world and its workings, the harmonic interaction of life can be seen. The health of the human being is seen through the lens of this harmony. The beginning level HeartMind Shiatsu techniques learned in Meridians Alive are enhanced and polished, with new techniques introduced.

Sensing Life — 45 hours
HeartMind Shiatsu II: Sensing Life takes students into the practice of
using the four tools of Asian Assessment; looking, asking, listening, and
touching. Through developing these four skills, the HeartMInd Shiatsu
practitioner can read the pattern of a person’s presenting symptoms, and offer sessions based on assessment of the receiver’s needs. In order to differentiate between wellness and illness students learn to perceive patterns in the life energy field of the body mind. Master Masunaga’s Hara and Back Assessment areas are studied. Beginning techniques are mastered at this level of training, and intermediate techniques using forearms and knees are introduced.

Meridian Personalities — 45 hours
In HeartMind Shiatsu III: In Meridian Personalities students are guided through study of personality and conditioned behaviors as a function of the energetic interactions of meridians and five elements. Drawing on the pioneering works of Beinfield and Korngold, Leon Hammer and Yves Requena students explore the integration of mind and emotions with the body. Active listening and touching techniques that utilize Somatic-emotional Integration are combined with Five Element and Meridian theory. A full-body HeartMind Shiatsu treatment is now integrated with understanding of the body mind connection. In this way, practitioners and clients alike experience an elevation of the Spirit, promoting health and harmony.

Student Clinic I — 35 hours
In the HeartMind Shiatsu Student Clinic I, students gain experience seeing clients in a clinical setting under supervision. The level I clinic begins after the Sensing Life course, and practical case work enhances
understanding and skill in practical application of the technique.

Student Clinic II — 35 hours
Student Clinic II follows after the Meridian Personalities course, and is
the place where students polish their skill in providing professional care.
Continued supervision provides the support necessary to make the transition from the classroom to professional practice.

National Certification
The 250 hour HeartMind Shiatsu Training Program meets national standards for modality training as set forth by the American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia (AOBTA). With an additional 100 hours of Traditional Chinese medicine, 100 hours of Western Anatomy and Physiology and 50 hours of related course work including Business and Ethics, students may attain national certification as an Asian Bodywork Therapist. Transcripts from other qualified Institutions are accepted toward this end. The HeartMind Institute actively assists the interested student in achieving the necessary training to acquire national certification.
